As a cosmetic plastic surgeon, I see the aftermath of having babies all the time. The price for having a baby can range from a few stretch marks on the hips or the front of the abdominal skin to yards and yards of loose tummy skin and muscles that don’t do well with slim fitting clothes at all.And breasts that used to be perky now sag and have more skin and nipple than actual breast gland. What happened?

I have heard all the complaints, too. “I used to have this great figure…why did this happen to me?” Or, “I gave him two lovely kids, now he is going to give me back the cute body that I sacrificed for them.” So what is it that happens during pregnancy that leads to this?

Part One: The Tummy Part of the problem here is the speed of changes to your body during pregnancy. When the uterus and that cute little package inside of it grows quickly, something has to give. And that something is the muscle wall that covers the uterus from the ribs to the pelvis. The key is the two abdominal muscles–the rectus muscles–that can become disconnected from each other. This separation is called a diastatis rectus. It is the tough tissue between them, the fascia, that is remarkable in its ability to widen out and make room for baby, spreading from one muscle edge to the other. It is also remarkable that it recoils at all after the baby has left the womb behind this tissue. But once baby is out, will everything shrink back and get those muscles lined up again? The answer is in some women yes, but after more than one pregnancy, probably not. It’s that weak point in the fascia between the abdominal muscles that no amount of sit-ups, crunches or core strengthening will ever glue back together. To test for separation of these muscles, stand in front of a mirror, no clothes on. Then suck in your gut and pull the loose skin together from the belly button to your pubic hair. If this flattens out your figure, and your body looks a lot like it did before the babies started coming, then you have just proven to yourself that you could benefit from a tummy tuck. There are two kinds of tummy tucks, and the difference is in what is done to the muscles. If you haven’t had babies, but have lost a lot of weight and have skin hanging a little bit over the pubic hair and the mons region, you might be able to get this loose skin flattened out with a short scar mini tummy tuck. This possibility assumes your muscles are fine and you didn’t ever stretch them out. There are usually no scars around the belly button, and though it might slide down an inch, it pretty much stays the same. The full tummy tuck addresses the muscles first.Using heavy sutures, the surgeon pulls the two edges from each muscle up to each other and secures that new position with a tight layer of stitching. Then with the woman flexed at her waist, the skin is pulled down to the pubic region and the excess cut away. The new scar will be at the panty line or lower. At the end of the procedure, the belly button that is still attached to the muscle layer is literally popped out from below and sewn to the skin that was covering it up.

This is the new look: Free from loose skin and weakened muscles, ready to go shopping in a few weeks and then off to the beach or pool! For more information about tummy tucks and plastic surgery visit Dr Phil Haecks website.

Fat transfer is a great option available now in plastic surgery. Fat can be transferred from the abdomen, back and/or thigh to the face, breast and buttock. Amplification with fat rejuvenates body regions impacted by age, weight changes, surgery, and pregnancy.

Fat grafting requires liposuction to sterilely provide fat for augmentation of other areas of the body. While fat removal may be a secondary benefit of the fat transfer procedure, many patients really love the results of liposuction. Only a limited volume of fat can be reliably transferred as the recipient site can only provide so much circulation to allow the fat to live. Some patients return for additional sessions of fat grafting beyond the primary session to achieve results beyond those one can reach with only one session. Click here for breast fat transfer photos.

Fat may be transferred to the face, breast, and buttock. As the face ages, it loses volume. With fat transfer, the cheeks become fuller, the folds between the nose and lips become less perceptible, and the lips become plumper with elevation and minimization of fine lines. The result is a softer face that is more uplifted.

Some women desire improved fullness of the breast without implants. They want a natural result with more subtle enhancement. Fat grafting to the breast results in rejuvenation of the tissues and particularly of the nipple, with increase in bra size by ½ cup to a cup.

Fat grafting is also great for women who have undergone breast cancer treatment with lumpectomy and radiation. Despite the fact that this type of surgery is called breast conservation, asymmetry will result with removal of a breast mass followed by radiation. Fat will help augment a breast made smaller by mass removal and will soften a breast made firm by radiation. This application of fat grafting often requires more than one session.

Many women are interested in amplifying their buttock region, whether it be because of significant weight loss or because of genetic predisposition. As all women know, the buttock is a very happy recipient for fat. Liposuction of the hip and lower mid back will also help improve the appearance and shape of the buttock.

The beauty of fat transfer is that no foreign material is placed in the body. Another positive, important aspect of this surgery is that incisions are insignificant and recovery is relatively short and low maintenance, with minimal time necessary for time off of work. How much of the fat will survive? Reliably, 50% of the fat moved into a body region will survive.

[...]

Three words summarize the most important characteristics to look for when choosing a cosmetic or plastic surgeon: qualifications, experience and comfort.

1. Qualifications count – Medical professionals in the United States have well-defined, stringent requirements for their professional training in every specialty. Experienced cosmetic plastic surgeons are accredited by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and belong to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The first thing you need to do is check on this Web site to make sure the physician you are considering is fully accredited.

Basic accreditation is only the beginning of assuring a physician’s qualifications.

Finally, involvement in professional associations indicates that a physician is keeping pace with changes in the profession. Look at the physician’s biography to see if he/she is a member of the above professional organizations.

2. Experience matters – The best indicator of how well a physician performs a particular procedure is how frequently s/he has performed it in the past. Make sure you ask about the doctor’s experience doing the specific procedure you are considering with the particular techniques s/he is recommending. And don’t just get a count. Find out how many of those procedures were successful. Talk to past patients to get a first-hand account of their experience with the physician. Look at before and after pictures and draw your own conclusion.

3. Comfort rules – Even if a physician is fully qualified and experienced with a procedure, that person may not be right for you. You need a physician who communicates openly with you, answers your questions and gives you the time you need to understand the technicalities. You need a physician who appears to have the same expectation for the outcome as you do. Most importantly, you need a person you can trust to advise you when the choices aren’t black and white. Be sure you are completely comfortable with your choice of physician so that during stressful periods immediately before, during and after the surgery or procedure, you’ll be taken care of the way you need.

Considering cosmetic surgery is an exciting time. You are imagining the possibilities and researching not only the procedures but who is most qualified to help you achieve your goals. You want to select a board certified plastic surgeon that possesses both technical expertise and artistic ability so that you achieve the natural look you desire.

Rhinoplasty usually takes an hour or two, though complicated procedures may take longer. During surgery the skin of the nose is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage which is then sculpted to the desired shape. The nature of the sculpting will depend on your problem and your surgeon’s preferred technique. Finally, the skin is redraped over the new framework.

Rhinoplasty

To begin the surgical procedure, very small incisions are produced that enable the surgeon entry to the fundamental sinus structure. When the skin is opened, the cartilage and bone are reshaped to kind the foundation for the new glance. Two fundamental approaches are used for executing nose surgical procedure. These methods are regarded as as the ‘open’ and the ‘shut’ techniques. The open method lets for optimum awareness and management at the time of the process. The incision utilized in the open strategy is brought in-between the nostrils on the columella (the medial nostril strip). In the closed method, the incisions are internal and recover rapidly; however, there is much less surgical control over the outcome. The medical practitioner can talk about that strategy is very best once the patient arrives for the preliminary consultation visit.
